The School

Mrs. Rachel Rai (32, married, one daughter) is the founder of Ganga Valley School. She studied abroad and worked as a computer instructor in Singapore for about 2 years.

The school started on the 1st of June 2004, as a pre-school, with six children and two rooms.

By the end of 2005 the number had increased to 40 children.

Now we have 70 children.

In April 2007, "Devloka", a shop which sells handicrafts and clothes, opened in order to support the school.
Further financial help comes from paper cards made by the children which are sold in the shop or other places in town.

Schedule

The school starts at 8 a.m. in the summer, 9 a.m. in the winter.

In the morning there are prayers, singing and physical exercises.

Afterwards, there are classes in English, Hindi and mathematics.

In the afternoon, after lunch, we offer homework support, drawing, dance, yoga and paper craft. Often these classes are conducted by volunteers, most of them being tourists visiting the city of Rishikesh.

Activities

Special events are picnics, exploring nature, visiting the zoo, temples and nearby towns.

In 2005 the school participated in a community function with a dance performance and won the second prize!
